For some people there is a debate over which to choose a Bluetooth gps receiver or a compact flash gps receiver. I have used both so I am writing from experience. There seem to be quite a few advantages a Bluetooth gps receiver has over a cf gps receiver.

The main advantage would be versatility, you can use a Bluetooth gps receiver with a Bluetooth pda as well as a compatible bluetooth mobile phone whereas with a cf gps receiver you are limited to only a compatible pda as mobile phones usually don't have a cf slot.

Another advantage is with regards to battery life, some bluetooth gps receivers have exceptional battery life lasting up to 26 hours, some mobile phones also have a long life, although a pda won't last anywhere near that, when using a cf gps receiver the pda battery is usually depleted faster as the it has to also power the cf receiver since the cf receiver can't work on its own

The third consideration is convenience, one can find some new gps receivers that are extremely small, the holux gpslim 236 comes to mind, because of their size and sensitivity you can stick them in your pocket and still get a very good signal so you don't have anything sticking out of the pda as is the case with a cf gps receiver.

Another thing to consider is that a lot of newer pdas seem to be loosing the compact flash interface, a good example is the fujitsu siemens loox 720, it has being rumoured that the loox 720 replacement won't be including a cf interface. My conclusion would be it seems that manufacturers don't consider the cf interface that important to include in newer pdas, kind of like being phased out so it might not be a good idea to invest in cf devices

My final argument would be that when it comes to using a gps receiver for driving, it is easier to position a bluetooth gps receiver in a convenient position where it can receive a better signal than with a cf gps receiver because since the cf gps receiver is fixed to the pda, you are limited by how much you can move the pda around and still have a good view of the pda screen.

Based on all these facts I would consider a bluetooth gps receiver a better choice to a cf gps receiver.

Customer Review: What DOESN'T GE do well???

General Electric...I don't know about the rest of you, but upon seeing who made this item I thought to myself 'Really? They make cellphone accessories now?'



Yep. They do. And they make them well.



But not only that, they perfected a concept I'd always been hoping somebody would - a bluetooth headset that allows you to simply swap out AAA batteries at will. Who wants to be talking on their bluetooth and suddenly the thing just dies on them in the middle of a conversation? Well...now you need to charge it until eternity. And, of course, the day finally comes when the piece of trash battery included with the headset only holds about 5 minutes of juice. Who wants that? With the AAA battery, it never wears out, it's not all that heavy, and you can replace it whenever you like in about 5-10 seconds. If you're really good you can do it one-handed while driving!



When I said GE perfected this concept, I was serious. The only other AAA-operated bluetooth headsets were both made by Motorola (there's one that runs on a AAAA battery, but I don't feel like spending $15 on a battery that's weaker than a AAA, nor do I feel like smashing open a bunch of 9V batteries to GET AAAA batteries). I own both of the Motorola versions, the H300 and the HS805. The H300 was their first attempt, and it's alright. I could run with it on, but it was incredibly quiet, the earpiece didn't insert into the ear, and it had a tendency to echo the other person's voice back to them. The HS805, the so-called 'upgraded version' of the H300, was simply a piece of junk. It had all the problems of the H300, plus it would fall off my ear if a gust of wind passed nearby. It had all of the problems of the H300 and no improvements whatsoever.



Enter General Electric. This bluetooth you're looking at right now - do you know how many of those problems it has? None. Zero. Zip. And using a long-life AAA battery, it has a MONTH of standby time. 30 DAYS. I hardly need to keep AAA batteries in my car with a life like that, but I do anyway. No echo, no discomfort, yesterday I ran 6 miles with it on and only needed to adjust it 3 times when it wiggled itself loose. It inserts into your ear so you can hear it extra well, and the earpiece is vertically adjustable to your ear's length. The earpiece also allows the weight of the device to be shared between your ear canal and the top of your ear. My ONLY complaint on this device is that it seems to have a difficult time filtering out wind. So outdoor use requires you to face a different direction and while driving you need to point your A/C vent away from your face. Not even a big enough deal to warrant 4 stars, in my book.



The best bluetooth on the market, IMHO, is less than $35. The choice is clear. Hope you all enjoyed this...

Upgraded to 9.2 from 7.x, very pleased with the product. It found the systems hardware quickly and with no effort on my part. My palm pilot, printer, usb thumb drive, email, web surfing are all 100% operational. Checking for O/S updates is a snap and requires no system admin knowledge. This Novell/SUSE is so much fun! For those wanting to compile code, browse internet, do email in an environment other than with MS, this is the way to go. Plus all your doc's, pdf's, jpeg's all work too. Install was a snap, gui's are great, very high quality product.

SuSE Linux is the oldest commercial distro of Linux, and they prove again why people are willing to pay for something that they can essentially get for free. SuSE 9.2 Pro puts Fedora Core, Mandrake, Slackware, Debian and the others to shame in every aspect.



Hardware support I found to be excellent, there was nothing that didn't detect or work correctly. YaST made it easy to choose what to install and they give you tons of options, more than WindowsXP could ever dream of giving you.



While i'm not a big fan of Gnome, Novell makes it look pretty good and surprisingly nice to use. KDE is in it's natural and beautiful state and the easy of use is pretty good.



Don't buy into the people who write 1-star reviews of this product claiming that SuSE destroyed all their data on install. If you don't know what you're doing you should not use this, period. Hold nobody accountable for yourself if you screw things up.



Fantastic distro, perfect for anybody learning to use Linux/UNIX. You won't be disappointed!

Bluetooth Technical Operations

Bluetooth is a high speed, low powered wireless link
technology that's designed to connect phones or other
portable equipment together with little to no work
required by the user. Unlike infrared, Bluetooth
doesn't require line of site positioning to work.

Current bluetooth phones prototype circuits are contained on a board
that is 0.9 cm square, with a much smaller circuit
board being developed.

When one Bluetooth device comes in contact with
another, they will automatically exchange addresses
and details of capability. Then, they can establish
a 1 MB link with security that they will use as
required. The protocols involved with handle both
data and voice, with a very flexible topography.

The technology achieves its goal by embedding tiny,
non expensive short range tranceivers into the
devices available today. The radio operates bluetooth phones on the
2.45 GHz frequency band, and supports up to 721
KBps, along with three voice channels.

Each devices bluetooth offers a unique 48 bit address from
the bluetooth phones IEEE 802 standard, with the connections being
point to point or multipoint. The max range is

also protected from radio interference by changing
their frequencies, also known as frequency hopping.

What's important, is the fact that Bluetooth
devices won't drain battery life. The specification
targets power consumption of the device, limiting

than 5% of the power that standard phones use.

Bluetooth will also guarantee security at the bit
level. The authentification is controlled by the
user via a 128 bit key. The radio signals can
be coded with anything up to 128 bit. With the
frequency hopping, Bluetooth is already very
hard to listen into.

The bluetooth phones baseband protocol is a combination of both
circuit and packet switches. Slots can be reserved
for synchronous packets as well. Each packet
will be transmitted in a different hop frequency.
Normally, a packet covers a single slot although
it can be extended to cover up to five slots.

Bluetooth can also support data channels of up to
three simultaneous voice channels. Therefore,

will support 64 KB.

From a technical standpoint, Bluetooth is very
different indeed. It's the best wireless method
in the world, surpassing even infrared. For
